At your wedding I photograph what you are too busy, too excited, too teary-eyed to see. Working unobtrusively I find the spontaneous moments that capture the emotion and intimacy of the day. Of course I will also take all the group portraits of families merging.
In my work as a photojournalist I have witnessed rituals around the world, from rain dances in the Kalahari Desert, to sweat-lodge ceremonies in juvenile prison, to war dances and coming-of-age initiations. During each ceremony a moment occurs when the atmosphere changes and a wave of goose-bumps washes over the people present. Weddings are no different. My job and joy is to be attentive to these moments, rendering goose-bumps into photographs.
Too often weddings are choreographed around the needs of the photographer. Weddings then tend towards all show and no feeling, all surface and no depth. During years of photographing highly sensitive stories, I’ve learned how to work tenderly within the bubble of intimacy. That is, after all, where the best pictures hatch.
