Artie Rawls was born in Hattiesburg, MS and lived in Jackson, MS for 6 years. He next lived in Reno, NV for 8 years and Phoenix, AZ for 7 years. Artie enjoyed art and drawing growing up. After high school he attended Arizona State University where he studied art and architecture. He then discovered an interest in photography. In 1976 he transferred to the University of Southern Mississippi and spent 3 years studying photography and art.

He graduated in 1978 as one of the best in his class and worked as a stock photographer for several years. In 1987 he went to work at Forrest General Hospital in their marketing department as an in-house photographer. After 10 years of creating award winning annual reports, calendars, brochures and covering a variety of social events he established Artie Rawls Photography.
