For me, making images is about storytelling. When I take on a wedding it's like taking on a condensed documentary project. Each celebration is unique and to be trusted to not only to be present, but to document the day, is an honor. Learning about my clients through their weddings and celebrations is a pleasure.
In a single day I get to meet most of the important people in a couple's life. I find it interesting to see how a couple plans their wedding, what they include from the traditions of their families, what they make their own. To see the day unfold with a huge range of emotion, is wonderful.
I photograph in the moment because life happens quickly. As a documentarian I work with people in their own environments. I am trained to listen and look and notice the details. I feel that there is often great significance not only in what people do, but how they do it. I strive to make images that are both informal and natural.
I believe that photographs should convey emotion and a sense of time and place. There is great power in photographs. They are at once silent and have the power to speak loudly. Photographs are a way of documenting people's stories and of preserving memory.
Elizabeth Massa is an international documentary photographer. She holds a BA in American Studies from Smith College and Graduate Certificate in Documentary Photography and Ethics from the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. She studied at the Herron School of Art and Design, as well as the prestigious Scuola Interazionale di Grafica, Venezia.
Elizabeth brings the experience of fine art study and field work to capture the emotion and moments of your event. Using her relaxed and natural style, she offers the creative alternative for celebration and wedding coverage. Elizabeth is also available for portraits, assignments and day in the life family sessions. Based in Princeton, New Jersey, she is available for world wide travel.
