I am drawn first to location, and then I decide exactly what concept or feeling I want to capture within a particular setting. When it comes to working with children it seems that a mood can become even more striking simply because of their contradictory nature. Children are fragile yet express themselves intensely, and finding that balance is what I am after when I create images of children. I want to document them as complex and emotional, and to capture their entire spectrum of sincere expressions, whether it means shy gestures and giggles, or pouty lips and tears. I want them to experience the session naturally, in their own unique way.
I try to forget that the camera exists separately from me and feed entirely off the child's reactions towards a scenario or environment. A child's spirit is honest and beautiful, and can even be haunting at times. I seek to capture that individuality when I am working; It isn't about asking them for that 'perfect smile' or even asking them to look at the camera. They'll do it on their own, and I'll be ready and waiting.
