Hi, my name is Terry and I'm a wedding photographer.
Those words were not always easy to say. The mention of "wedding photographer" among many of my photojournallism peers would bring snickers or outright laughter. Sixteen years ago, when I left the confines of a "real" job as Photography and Graphic Editor for a large Gannett newspaper in Michigan, my executive editor slapped me on the back and joked "Well, you could always shoot weddings." Little did either of us know he was giving me solid career advice.
Since leaving the editor's job my path has taken many twists and turns, although I never strayed far from my photojournalistic roots. Soon after arriving in Pittsburgh in 1990 I hooked up with The New York Times and for the next decade I covered "all the news that was fit to print" across three states. When I wasn't chasing news, I was working for major corporations creating documentary images for their annual reports and marketing materials. Corporate work in those days was great fun - corporate jets, big budgets, International travel and an all around good time.
But something important was missing. Photography had become like fast food, tasted all right, but wasn't satisfying my deeper hunger to make a difference in the world.
Then it happened.
An art director friend asked me to photograph her wedding - before she was even engaged! We laughed and I said yes, whenever she found the right guy.
Well she did find a guy, a great guy, and the wedding was awesome. We're still in touch today, and, best of all my pictures are there, documenting the beginning, their wedding day love story -- from beginning to end. And they will pass them down to each generation as a family heirloom.
All of a sudden it became clear, capturing each beautiful moment on such a special day, gave my work a deeper meaning. It's what I had hungered for all those years ago. Now my images can make a difference, one family at a time.
