The Ebell of Long Beach is a prime example of Spanish-Revival design so favored during the 1920s. It features the characteristic red tile roof, and its soaring portico makes a dramatic statement with its intricate, sculpted design. Reminiscent of European churches and government buildings of the 17th century, the Ebell embodies the Churrigueresque style — a Spanish Colonial adaptation of Italy and France's exuberant rococo ornamentalism.
When you cross the threshold, you find yourself in a double-story indoor Courtyard. The spacious terra cotta floor is flanked by arched colonnades, with decorative cornices and moldings. Opposite the entrance, water trickles down a tiled Spanish fountain beneath an archway. The upper level Mezzanine has access to two rooms upstairs — one for the groom and his pals, the other for the bride and her attendants to prepare for a grand entrance.
A bride with a sense of the theatrical first walks out onto the Mezzanine, gliding above her guests like a heavenly vision in white; next she makes her way down the stairway, and passes through the admiring crowd before reaching her groom, who takes her hand in front of the fountain.
When the dinner bell rings, guests walk up to the Mezzanine, past the Courtyard, and down to a luxurious Grand Hall next door. Handcrafted iron chandeliers like those in the Courtyard, and plush draperies matching the ones in the Piano Room create a unified motif at the Ebell.
