About the band: Something Steel has been in existence since 2002, but the nucleus of the band was together under another name for many years previously. They perform regularly around the region at both private and public events. They have played Utica Square in Tulsa for The Summer's Fifth Night concert series many years, including 2003 when they drew an overflow crowd of about 2000 people. They have performed at many music festivals in the region including Mayfest, Greenwood Jazz Festival, and Rooster Days in Broken Arrow which always draw big crowds. They are also the featured music at Driller Stadium (Tulsa AA baseball franchise) for their annual Jimmy Buffett night promotion since 1999. They also play many fund-raising events and private parties for individuals, country clubs, and corporations.
About the musicians: All the band members have an extensive background in music including music degrees. Steel Drum players, Chris Harris and Steve Craft, are also both band directors in Owasso and Bartlesville respectively. Steve also has played percussion with many symphony orchestras around the country and received his training at Louisville University. Chris received his music education degree from The University of Oklahoma. Chris’ wife, Marti Harris, also sings vocals for the band and has performed professionally for many years. Guitarist, David John, and drummer Russell Grant are both full time musicians and have performed with many top artists in the Tulsa area. John has a degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Northern Florida, and also operates a recording and production studio, Alpha & Omega Productions. Grant received his training from the University of Tulsa. Bass player and vocalist Greg Spears has a music performance degree from the University of Tulsa, and performs regularly with ensembles and symphonies in Northeastern Oklahoma.
