In 1988, Randy Clegg and Wayne Curtis rented a storefront from Fritz Haertel, the legendary "Rye King" of Salt Lake City. Fritz ran Salt Lake's successful Beehive Bakery, and even as he was downsizing his business, he was giving rise to a new one - Apple Spice Junction.
As Randy and Wayne began Apple Spice Junction, a box lunch delivery and catering company, Fritz hung around the ovens and mixing bowls, offering gentle suggestions and imparting the wisdom that his 88 years afforded him. In addition to baking tips, Fritz taught the young entrepreneurs the value of hard work, the importance of being honest in business and that baking bread was an honorable way to earn a living.
Nearly 20 years later, Apple Spice Junction has garnered national recognition for its fresh deli cuisine, timely deliveries and courteous catering, and Apple Spice franchises can be found across the country. Despite its impressive growth, the company remains true to its original mission statement: to provide fresh, healthy food with exceptional customer service, and to provide employees with a pleasant and profitable career. Fritz would be proud!
