The biggest misconception about DJs is that they just play music. If that were true than any DJ, or even a good friend, would work for your event.
The reality is, just like any other service provider you may hire, you pay for what you get and experience DOES make a huge difference.
Remember: The price you pay for your DJ is equal to the quality of service that you should expect to be provided. If guests leave midway through the reception or event due to an unprofessional DJ, your money was not well spent.
The primary consideration that comes into play when you are deciding whether you want to hire a professional DJ or an inexperienced person is the importance of the day. Generally speaking, you only get one shot to get your event right. Make sure and do your research on multiple companies. Ask your photographer or venue for a DJ referral (most have cards or lists of entertainment providers that they know to be highly experienced).
Meet with the DJ that will be at your event ahead of time. Make sure that your DJ is fully prepared to perform emcee duties, that they are comfortable (and experienced enough) to help orchestrate your event. Above all, make sure you are comfortable with the personality and level of experience that they will provide.

* Follow up with an informational packet and personal meeting to explain the service options and learn more about the company.
* Provide a contract that specifies the event date and services needed.
