Few of us ever enter a building and ask who the architect was. That question might cross your mind, however, when you see the 101 California Building and Plaza. Although it was built more than 20 years ago, this cylindrical tower of glass and granite still outclasses its Financial District neighbors.
It was designed by world-renowned architect Philip Johnson, whose famous works include the Crystal Cathedral in Southern California, the Seagram Building in New York City, and the Glass House, his wall-to-wall glass residence in Connecticut. Yet it was the 101 California Building that won him the 1980 American Architects Gold Medal Award for outstanding architectural achievement of the year.
Any restaurant inside this building would have to be splendid in its own right, and the Atrium does not disappoint. Step into the elegant maplewood foyer, where Oriental runners lead you past a polished black marble bar into a split-level dining room. Here, the soothing atmosphere derives from an artistic combination of elements: hand-painted walls in veined shades of pale green create a faux-marble effect; couches clad in eggplant crepe fabric, pink Italian granite columns and antique furnishings add luxurious touches, while exotic orchids, bromeliads, palms and topiaries provide vibrant accents.
Atrium's chef augments the 101 California experience with what one reviewer referred to as "sparkling food that represents the best in California Cuisine." Specialties include Aged Filet Mignon with Grilled Wild Mushrooms, Crabcakes with Mango Relish, and Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna with Tapenade.
From its architectural pedigree to its imaginative menu and convenient Financial District location, Atrium can satisfy even the most demanding social or corporate clientele.
