So you’ve decided to have a video of your wedding. How do you know what to look for when choosing a videographer? Here are some guidelines from my own experience of more than 20 years recording weddings and other special events.
A wedding videographer’s goal is to be non- intrusive. I work around the photographer, trying to be as invisible as possible while capturing all the important moments of this very special event.
I’m usually invited to record the ceremony and reception. Depending on the location of the ceremony, I follow the instructions of the officiant, the bride, or in some cases a family member. In houses of worship, I generally prefer to be in the back or in the balcony. In an outdoor ceremony, I have more choices about where to station the camera tripod for better pictures and better audio quality.
The unedited video, depending on the activities filmed, will be between 3 and 4 hours, from the beginning of the ceremony until the end of the reception and party. Most couples prefer no editing, because they like to see as much wedding footage as possible. The importance of the wedding, which family members and guests may travel long distances to attend, makes the footage so much more valuable and memorable.
Usually the bride contacts me by phone or by clicking Request Information. After discussing the wedding date and my availability, we talk about the location of the ceremony and the reception, the total time for videography, and the travel distance involved. Based on this information, I can offer a specific fee and a payment plan, if needed. I also offer a 15- minute promotional video of my work for review, including a 2- minute “highlights of the day.” If the clients request, I will mail them an unedited version of a full wedding to show my videography style. It’s important that I hear back from the couple as soon as possible, to confirm our verbal agreement.
