Ed Avila is a self-taught photographer. Frustrated with a box camera, Avila purchased his first adjustable camera at the age of 15 to enable him to create on paper what he saw in his mind.
Avila's style of photography is, as described by his clients, "alive." He works outdoors as much as possible and all outdoor work is done without flash, reflectors, or what he refers to as "paraphernalia." He prefers to adjust the portraits to the environment and finds that this lack of artificial aids lends to his unique style. Indoor portraits are also accomplished with a minimum of lights and reflectors.
Avila's primary concern is to produce an expression of his client's style and personality at their best. He feels he is able to interact more with his clients by using less equipment. The ability to produce a portrait that brings tears to the eyes of a client is a reward in itself. Delivering a portrait that brings such lasting happiness to a client is what makes photography such a rewarding profession for Avila.
The photographs of W. Eugene Smith influenced Avila's photography. Although primarily photojournalistic, each of Smith's pictures is a portrait that shows the inner person-not merely a picture of a face. Mr. Avila strives to achieve this quality in each portrait whether it is a wedding candid, a portrait of a small child, or a formal studio portrait.
Mr. Avila sums up his photographic style as "to photograph what is behind the face."
