Elaine Bell loves to cook, entertain, eat and enjoy good wine. What better combination of passions for the wine country's premier caterer! Growing up in Sonoma Valley, she spent many years in the family kitchen cooking for her parents and five siblings.
At the Culinary Institute of America (C.I.A.), her passion for food and wine exploded into a desire to learn the art of pairing foods with wines, particularly the ones from her own back yard, Sonoma and Napa Valleys. After leaving the C.I.A., Elaine cooked in the restaurant at Domaine Chandon Winery under the direction of chef Philippe Jeanty. This was the beginning of the food and wine revolution and it was thrilling to be working in an environment which introduced cutting edge ingredients to California, such as live eel, braised chicken hearts, balsamic vinegar and freshly plucked quail, to name a few.
In 1982, Elaine ventured out on her own to open one of the first catering companies in the wine country, Elaine Bell Catering Company. She, along with others, was responsible for pioneering winery events which now are so common place. In those early days, she was noted for unhooking the Kenmore gas range in her home and transporting it out to vineyards to provide "restaurant" quality foods for the vintners. [see the pictures] The idea was an overwhelming success. Her company has grown over the years and has always retained the excellent quality and integrity which made her famous.
Elaine and her chef spend many hours in the kitchen creating new menus for the catering company, wineries and for publication. Her works have been featured in "Town & Country" and "Special Events" magazines and many national newspapers. She enjoys teaching catering techniques at the Culinary Institute of America, where she serves on the Alumni Committee and the Board of Trustees.
