I have been a photographer for 20 years. I honed most of my photographic skills by taking beautiful landscape photographs using a 4"x5" large format "view" camera. Using this type of camera takes an extreme amount of patience and understanding of the art, and science of taking a photograph. Everything is manual so all calculations, light readings, and depth of field choices must be made by the photographer. The camera does nothing but open and shut the shutter.
I believe the challenge of learning to photograph this way has made me a better all around photographer. I bring these skills to my current photography adventure, portrait photography. Even though the option is there, I do not typically use the large format camera for portraits.
Although equipment is important, the ability to recognize and capture a meaningful photograph is more useful than the best camera in the world. I currently shoot with a Canon 5d and use the best "L" series lenses Canon makes. However, I also shoot with an eye for the unexpected and the beautiful.
