6. Last, and Most Important - Make sure the photographer you choose has your best interest in mind. Their main goal should be to produce the portrait that is important to you. There are some incredible professional photographers out there, but there are just as many that give us all a "black eye". Make sure you chose one that you are comfortable working with.

The one thing you want to remember when you look at your portrait is that particular moment in time, not a terrible experience you had with the person who took the portrait.
